+ Workshop details

The physical postures we practice in the West today and call yoga, are a marked departure from what yoga originated as thousands of years ago in the East. What has evolved today still has value however, and millions of people per year achieve positive results related to improved physical, mental and emotional health through yoga and mindfulness practices.

Why exactly does yoga still work in the West if it has departed so dramatically from its thousand-year old Eastern counterpart? More importantly, although modern, Western yoga works for many, there are numerous cases of increased stress, anxiety and emotional disturbance. Some people who have practiced modern yoga report re-living old traumas, or becoming aware of unconscious patterns that plague them and which don’t seem to be helped by yoga, breathing techniques or mindfulness. Why is this?

Body psychology, or Somatic Psychology, has the answers. Our current understanding of the nervous system explains why yoga, breathing exercises, and mindfulness can be helpful and healing to some, yet anxiety-provoking or even re-traumatizing to others. In this weekend-long workshop, you will understand the science and physiology behind modern yoga practices, and why and how they can both help and heal. You will also be introduced to a variety of practices, exercises and principles to remedy some of the ways in which yogic practices might not be as conducive to healing. Through increased awareness, choice, and practical experiences you will understand why Western yoga and body psychology pick up where each other leaves off, and complement each other so skillfully and beautifully.

This workshop is taught in a multi-method format. There will be led yoga classes in addition to mindfulness practices and breath awareness. There will also be times for lecture and group discussion, time for journaling and personal reflection, as well as optional group work.

Please note that this workshop is not group therapy. You will never be required to share your personal stories in front of the group, although there will be opportunity to share your experiences from the exercises and practices in the workshop, if you wish to do so. The purpose of the activities and group discussion are for you to seek deeper understanding and engage in personal, inner-exploration. Activities and exercises are led in a safe, gentle manner and participation is always optional.
